Thursday's Results: New Richmond baseball sweep gives Tigers a share of MBC title

The New Richmond baseball team has won a share of the Middle Border Conference championship.

The Tigers swept a double-header from St. Croix Central on Thursday at New Richmond's Citizens Field, giving the Tigers 10 straight wins in MBC play. The Tigers will complete their conference schedule next Monday with a game at Somerset. Ellsworth split its double-header with Amery on Thursday. That means the Tigers are 11-2 in the MBC and Ellsworth is 10-3, both with one game remaining, meaning the Tigers now own a share of the 2017 MBC title. They win an outright title with a win at Somerset on Monday.

The Tigers won the opening game against Central by a 13-3 score. The second game went the Tigers' way, 7-0. The Tigers received sharp pitching in both games. Grant Riemenschneider got the win in the opener. Jake Jirik pitched five shutout innings in the second inning, combining with reliever Eric Hedlund on a two-hitter.

The New Richmond girls soccer team has already locked up a share of the Middle Border Conference championship. The Tigers found out that Spooner, whom the Tigers were supposed to play Friday in the final round of MBC action, forfeited the game. The Tigers will share the conference title with Hayward. Both teams finished the season with 7-0-1 MBC records. The Tigers were in action Thursday, hosting Somerset in a non-conference game. The Tigers struck for two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game and controlled the action in a 6-0 win over the Spartans. New Richmond will also be in action on Saturday, hosting Onalaska at 11 a.m. in a game that is crucial for the WIAA tournament seeding.

The Somerset baseball team played well on Thursday but lost at Prescott, 2-0. The only runs of the game came on a sixth-inning throwing error by the Spartans. AJ Beasley pitched effectively for the Spartans. Somerset couldn't muster any offense, finishing the game without a hit.

The New Richmond boys tennis team hosted a triangular against River Falls on Thursday. It was a tough day for the Tigers, losing 5-2 against River Falls and 6-1 against Hudson. Cole Kramer and Joe Smallidge produced two of the Tigers' wins, sweeping their matches at three doubles. It was also announced Thursday that the remainder of the Middle Border Conference tennis tournament will be completed on Tuesday, May, 30.

New Richmond's softball team run up against the hard-hitting girls from Ellsworth on Thursday, losing 8-1. The Tigers will play at Ellsworth on Friday.

The Somerset softball team earned a 3-1 win over Amery on Thursday, sweeping their games this season against the Warriors.
