Forfeit: New Richmond forfeiting Friday football game to Rice Lake

The decision was made Friday afternoon for the New Richmond varsity football team to forfeit its game scheduled for Friday night at Rice Lake.

The decision was made after a wide-spread illness struck a number of players. Players began getting ill at approximately 2 a.m. on Friday and several needed to be taken to the emergency room, according to New Richmond athletic director Casey Eckardt. He said "at least 10 starters" were ill and more were still beginning to show signs of becoming ill.

New Richmond School District administrator Patrick Olson said in an announcement "Due to schedule conflicts, the game was unable to be rescheduled. The decision to forfeit is based on the main emphasis of safety and the health of our athletes."
