When Somerset graduate Anne Sullivan and her boyfriend Ryan Doughty were wrapping up their last year at Colorado Mountain College, they decided to do something special for the summer. Between their graduation and starting at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., they decided to bike from coast-to-coast. "It's been a huge challenge," Sullivan said. "It's been a huge learning experience, but every day is an adventure, that's for sure." Sullivan and Doughty started off their adventure in Sagamore Beach, Mass., at Doughty's parents' house.
A man charged in the arson and burglary incident at St. Croix Central Elementary School last month has been implicated in two earlier burglaries in Roberts. Justin Walter Nelson, 24, Roberts, was ordered to post $5,000 cash bail June 18 in an initial appearance on felony burglary and misdemeanor theft and criminal damage charges. The charges resulted from the investigation of a burglary complaint at the U.S. Postal Service office.
During a special session of the New Richmond City Council on Monday night, city officials reviewed their existing strategic planning goals and established some new ones. City Administrator Mike Darrow led the council through a brainstorming session that lasted about 90 minutes. At the start, Darrow reminded the council of the goals they had set in 2011, with the help of consultant Pete Kling. The goals included: -- Maintaining affordable and effective governmental services. -- Decreasing the city's overall levy by 2 percent per year.
When VFW Post 10818 was named the top post in Wisconsin last year, Commander Dave Green said some people told him the service agency got lucky. But now that the organization has won the All State Team designation for the second year in a row, Green said the naysayers were proven wrong. "I was pretty excited," Green said of the honor that was announced June 14 at the state VFW Convention in Green Bay. "It was my ultimate goal to do this two years in a row, and we did it. It's one heck of an honor."

A 67-year-old Hortonville man died in a single-car rollover accident that occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, June 26. Early this afternoon the Wisconsin State Patrol identified the man as Gary J. Fritz. His wife Donna K. Fritz, 66, was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire with non-life-threatening injuries. According to the State Patrol, the Fritz vehicle was traveling west on Hwy. 29 in Dunn County near Elk Mound and exited onto the 52 interchange that merges to I-94 west.

Snowmobile Watercross racers are once again gearing up for the World Championship Snowmobile Watercross in Grantsburg, Wis. July 19-21. The annual event, enjoying its 37th year, will draw thousands of spectators to Memory Lake to watch as over 100 racers, including top competitors from the United States and Canada, compete on open water in both drags and oval classes. It has been a whirlwind return to volleyball for Missi Whittington. That return to volleyball has resulted in Whittington being hired as the new varsity volleyball coach at New Richmond High School. She replaces Bob Fisher, who resigned in May after he took the head coaching position at Stillwater High School.
