A man led Minnesota and Wisconsin sheriff's deputies on a chase in a reported stolen car Thursday morning and remained at large in the early afternoon. St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts said Loren H. Phillips, 43, was the alleged driver of a stolen car taken from 787 Pine Ridge Terrace, town of Troy. The car was reported headed into Minnesota, and Washington County authorities located it. They gave chase back into Wisconsin where the vehicle crashed near County Road V and 150th Street in the town of St.

A River Falls man charged in the shooting death of a friend pleaded not guilty to two felony charges Friday afternoon in St. Croix County Circuit Court. An errant bullet fired form a .22 rifle that hit a woman at a Somerset Campground has been linked through ballistics to a pair of youths plinking in the area. St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts said Friday the slugs from the incident matched up with the guns two young men who were shooting in the woods. The St. Croix County Board of Supervisors took a step toward a change in management at its regular June meeting Tuesday night and name a county administrator. Pat Thompson, 52, was awarded a two-year contract by a 10-5 vote after a period of discussion in which some supervisors said the county was paying too much for the job. Thompson's base salary is $135,000 a year with incentive bonuses that could bring him an extra $15,000 each year.
After going nearly six months with the St. Croix County administrator's position vacant, the position is in the final stage of being filled. Patrick H. Thompson, who most recently was administrator for Hamilton County in Cincinnati, Ohio, was selected by the county board's administrative committee as the top candidate Wednesday. The full board will vote on the choice at its June 7 regular meeting. If his contract is approved by a majority of the 19 members, Thompson is expected to start work June 8.
St. Croix County Clerk Cindy Campbell was preparing Tuesday for the recount procedure for the votes cast April 5 in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race. The recount was to commence at 9 a.m. Wednesday and continue for more than a week. "It will take eight days if not more," Campbell said Tuesday. "We have to be done by May 9." Supreme Court Justice David Prossser won the state-wide spring election by 7,316 votes over JoAnn Kloppenburg. The margin was less than one-half of one percent allowing Kloppenburg to petition for a recount. Campbell said 16,723 ballots were cast in St.
There is improvement in the economy, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind (D-La Crosse), told a small business roundtable group Tuesday morning at the UW-River Falls Hudson Center. Two people were booked into the St. Croix County Jail and arrest warrants have been issued for two others held by Ramsey County (Minn.) authorities following a Friday afternoon burglary and shooting incident in the town of Emerald.
