The public library is an institution that prides itself on being a place open to all, but that wasn't always the case. In celebration of the grand opening of the John Doar History trail, Friday Memorial Library, WITC and Table 65 are excited to present a unique opportunity to meet Geraldine Hollis, one of the "Tougaloo Nine" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 at the WITC New Richmond campus.
The 2017 Ox Cart Medallion hunt has begun. The medallion is a silver disk with the Lion's logo on it. It is located on public property in the Village of Star Prairie. Starting July 26, one clue will be published weekly at oxcartdays.org and in the New Richmond News. One lucky winner will be awarded $100 at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20. The medallion will never be hidden where a person would have to disturb or destroy any Village plant life or property. Clue No. 2: "I am near, I am far, you can see me everywhere you are."
TO THE EDITOR At the last Town of Richmond Planning Commission meeting, a member asked for a vote allowing a real estate developer to change the county-mandated restriction on lot size and allow the developer to change lot sizes to 1 acre.
Trinity Lutheran Church completed its 2017 fundraising drive in support of St. Croix Central High School and its efforts to provide activities and programs regarding suicide awareness and prevention. For the past three years, Trinity has determined that one of the needs in the SCC community is to financially help the school provide activities and programs that provide insight and knowledge of suicide and its extreme effect on all people.
The Immaculate Conception Church of New Richmond will host an Irish Mass at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, featuring the Irish band Switchback. Mass will be repeated again at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's church in Erin Prairie. All are welcome. According to the Rev. John Anderson, the Mass — which is called "The Hibernian Mass" and was written by Switchback — will be about an hour long and will be very similar to a normal Catholic Mass.
The 2017 St. Croix County Fair ran from Wednesday, July 19-Sunday, July 23.

Over the years, I've had so many people tell me that working at the library would be their dream job. I can't say I ever thought I would grow up to be a library director, especially because anyone who knows me, knows I'm not the quietest person. Yes, I've been shushed by patrons before-shock! However, I do feel blessed to be able to work in this community and share life with so many fantastic people that walk through our doors. I believe we have the best staff that strives to give great customer service and the team gets to do jobs that are best suited for their skillsets.
The 17th annual Fun Fest tennis tournament saw 98 different people enter with 108 total entries over the Fun Fest weekend, July 13-16.
The Purdy River Band returns to perform Wednesday evening, July 26, at The Heritage Hillside Series outside at the New Richmond Heritage Center bandstand. Pack up your picnic supper, bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy great music from 6:30-8 p.m.
