New Richmond parks might see an uptick in activity this summer, thanks to a creative construction project. A diverse group of local artists, 4-H members, parents and city officials are launching a new effort in community parks this week. A number of fairy houses have been constructed, decorated and placed in various locations. According to Christine Melby, founder of Messes and Masterpieces and project coordinator, the idea came from similar efforts in parks across the nation. There are no maps to help people find the nine houses, Melby explained.
To the Editor: The second amendment states that people have the right to bear arms. But when the second amendment was made, people only had muskets. Now people have fully automatic machine guns with 30-round clips. It's obvious that guns need to be more controlled, especially with all of the recent school shootings, but the question is how? Gun manufacturers have proposed to lower the amount of bullets a clip can hold. This is good because it can limit the amount of bullets you can shoot. Also, limit the amount of bullets a person can buy.

It is said that kissing the Blarney stone at Blarney Castle near Cork, Ireland, will endow the kisser with great skill at verbal flattery. A delegation from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College hopes that's true as they recently returned from an 11-day cultural exchange experience with Waterford Institute of Technology in Waterford, Ireland. WITC students toured manufacturing facilities in Ireland and participated in a variety of seminars at Waterford on the topics of international business and Irish culture.
Last week my friend, Lee Mork, who lives nearby stopped over to catch up on current events. Lee hunts and fishes whenever he can find the time and also knows a lot about outdoor events and the timing to take advantage of them at their peak. Because of the late spring, many natural opportunities have been moved back and the timeframe to take advantage of them will be shortened.
"Wow," was all Harold Buckentin could say when he recalled how the Chilakoot Bowhunters Club had come to call a 53-acre parcel of challenging terrain just outside Somerset home nearly 60 years ago. According to club newsletter editor, Marlene Odahlen-Hinz, the club started in 1953 as an enthusiastic gathering of 30 bowhunters from the Stillwater, Minn. vicinity just looking for a place to target practice. "During the first couple of years, the club shot both indoors and out wherever they could.
Call them the Java & Trash Squad. New Richmond Mayor Fred Horne and City Administrator Mike Darrow gathered at 6:45 a.m. Thursday at Jet's Coffee Bistro downtown to begin a new weekly effort in the city. The city officials begin with a cup of coffee and a breakfast snack, then they gather up trash bags and gloves and head to the sidewalks and streets. They spend about a half an hour picking up garbage, cigarette butts and more. Darrow said the Thursday morning activity is an outgrowth of the recently completed Small Area Study commissioned by the city.
The Atlanta Braves wasted little time in signing Somerset's Jared Dettmann to a professional baseball contract. Dettmann agreed to a contract with the Braves on Thursday after being the team's 17th round draft selection in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft over the weekend. Dettmann was scheduled to fly to Orlando, Fla. on Friday to receive his team physical. From there, Dettmann is set to travel to Danville, Va., to join the Danville Braves.
