Although Wisconsin taxpayers will need to have their taxes filed by April 17, they won't be done paying for those taxes until May 2. According to the Tax Foundation, Wisconsin taxpayers will have to work until that day in order to pay their share of state and local taxes, which includes property taxes. They call the day "tax freedom day." According to the group's recently released annual report, Wisconsin ranks 7th in the nation in its tax burden. Meanwhile Minnesota ranks 11th, while Iowa ranks 18th and Illinois ranks 22.

Last year, Allegra Goodman made a splash with her fourth novel, which I missed by a country mile. Fortunately it's now out in a snazzy paperback edition "Intuition," (Dial Press, $13.95) so I can get another crack at it. "Intuition" is a rare mixture of science and passion, a love story set in a lab populated by a publicity-hungry oncologist, a talented research scientist and a post-doctoral fellowship recipient. Books like this don't come off the presses with much regularity, so it's difficult to scare up comparisons.

MADISON -- Wisconsin's deer hunters' next big opportunity takes place this week during a statewide antlerless gun deer hunt that runs from Dec. 7 through Dec. 10. State wildlife officials say more than 100 of Wisconsin's 130 deer management units have deer populations that need strong hunting pressure put on antlerless deer to control population size. These units are designated as either Herd Control (HC), Earn-a-Buck (EAB) or Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Antlerless deer carcass tags in HC and EAB units are available in unlimited numbers at $2 each.
