To raise funds to build a much needed animal shelter St. Croix Animal Friends are hosting a Spring Gala on Saturday, March 29, at the Valley House, 1237 Highway 35, north of Hudson. Diana Neubarth, president of SCAF, encourages everyone to attend and enjoy the performance of Matt Dunn, comedian and Magician, who promises to amaze the audience with his incredible sleight o fhand. Social hour begins at 5 p.m. followed by a buffet, with a silent auction and raffle adding to the night's excitement.
Carloads of strange looking men all dressed up will be spotted in the St. Croix Valley on Feb. 14. The annual Valentine’s Day Singing Valentine project is again provided by the members of the Croix Chordsmen Chorus. Singing Valentine quartets will travel all over the eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin area to serenade lucky recipients on Valentine’s Day. They will sing two songs, and present a rose, box of candy and provide a photo of the event, for a $40 fee.
The Old Gem Professional Company and Young Performers Ensemble will perform “Annie Jr.” at 7 p.m. Fridays, Dec. 6 and 13, 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14; 2 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15, and weekdays Dec. 5-20, at the Old Gem Theatre, 116 South Knowles Ave., New Richmond. Willow River Players, the New Richmond area community theater organization, will be holding a sale this Saturday at their storage unit on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.-noon at 230 North Fifth Street in New Richmond. Turn west at the Super America store and follow the signs. The group, founded in 1996, has done over 25 productions and is downsizing their overstock of costumes and props. “We store our set pieces, costumes and props and decorations,” noted WRP President Chad Leonard.

It’s commonplace for Minnesota readers to get together and talk about the state’s greatest novelists. Sinclair Lewis and F. Scott Fitzgerald are generally recalled in one breath. Younger folks will of course remember Louise Erdrich, Jon Hassler and Tim O’Brien. Seldom, in my experience, has the name J.F. Powers popped up in this or that pantheon of gopher novelists.
The Phipps Children’s Theater will hold auditions for adults and children ages 8 and older for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” on Saturday, Oct. 19, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 20, between noon and 2 p.m. in the Black Box Theater of The Phipps Center for the Arts. Parents must accompany their children to auditions. Families are encouraged to audition together. Those auditioning should bring a photo or school picture for the director. All will be asked to read from the script.

For the fourth straight month, St. Croix County had the lowest jobless rate among the state’s 72 counties at 4%. Coming in at No. 2, according to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, was Pierce County at 4.2% The Madison area of Dane County was third at 4.5%. The DWD said rates decreased or remained the same in 71 of 72 Wisconsin counties between July and August.
