Aaron Schaffhausen will find out this afternoon if he’ll ever get a chance at freedom after he killed his three daughters and tried to burn down their home in River Falls last July. Prosecutors recommend three life terms for the murders with no chance for a supervised release plus an additional 12 1/2 years for the attempted arson. Schaffhausen, 35, failed to convince a jury that he was insane when he stabbed and slashed 11-year-old Amara, eight-year-old Sophie and five-year-old Cecilia Schaffhausen at the home of his ex-wife. The couple divorced six months earlier, and Aaron admitted

Gogebic Taconite has temporarily pulled its military-style security guards from its mining site in northern Wisconsin. The firm admitted Wednesday that Bulletproof Securities of Arizona worked for six days without having a state license. Private security firms are required to be licensed. The house in River Falls where Aaron Schaffhausen killed his three daughters will be auctioned off in a sheriff’s foreclosure sale on Aug. 13. Schaffhausen defaulted on a mortgage he took out last March. That was two months after he and his wife divorced and he moved to North Dakota – and four months before he killed his daughters Amara, Sophie and Cecilia. Schaffhausen stopped making payments on the mortgage in January 2012, leaving $181,000 unpaid. He’ll be sentenced July 15. In April a jury rejected his insanity defense.
Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency Wednesday in St. Croix and six other counties hardest hit by torrential rains and floods over the past week. The seven counties are St. Croix, Grant, Crawford, Vernon, Richland, Iowa and Ashland. Walker toured Boscobel in Grant County, which had 13 inches of rain last weekend alone. Tod Pritchard of Wisconsin Emergency Management said he’s still rounding up damage reports to see if there’s enough to seek federal disaster aid.
HUDSON -- A former inmate in the St. Croix County jail has filed a lawsuit against the county and its sheriff, alleging she was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a jailer, who later killed himself. Jackie L. Peterson, 32, currently an inmate in the Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center, Union Grove, claims that on Nov.
There are already candidates for 18 of the 19 seats on the St. Croix County Board, and races are shaping up in five districts. The only district that has no declared candidate as yet is District 8, which includes the village of Hammond, part of the town of Eau Galle and the towns of Hammond, Pleasant Valley and Rush River. In April 2010 for the first time, county voters will select 19 rather than 31 county supervisors.
New Richmond made the first pitch for a portion of St. Croix County's allocation of federal economic stimulus subsidies intended to help municipalities pay for building or infrastructure projects. But the county's highway department is eyeing some of the subsidy to help catch up on lagging road work. Other departments and municipalities may also want part of the limited assistance. Last week St. Croix's finance committee voted to recommend that the county board designate the entire county a Recovery Zone, which is the first step toward qualifying for the assistance. St.
At its Tuesday, Sept. 22, meeting, the St. Croix County Board will be asked to authorize a $600,000 Community Development Block Grant loan for Engineered Propulsion Systems, New Richmond. The company, which intends to build a new diesel engine for airplanes and helicopters, has applied to the Wisconsin Department of Commerce for the federally funded grant. The company has patented a light-weight flat V-8 engine and plans to bring the fuel-efficient diesel engine into production.
Arguing for fairness and that more money would mean more resources for people looking for jobs or inexpensive entertainment, librarians are asking St. Croix County to raise its library tax. The county's finance committee listened to discussion last week but took no action and will instead forward the matter to the full St. Croix County Board during a preliminary 2010 budget presentation Sept.
