Out of the 34 compliance checks conducted in 2017, 28 clerks or retailers — 83 percent — upheld the law and refused the sale of tobacco to Pierce County underage youth, according to the Pierce County Health Department. Two of these retailers, BP Amoco in Prescott and Dollar General in River Falls, were randomly selected to receive special recognition this year. The health department wishes to thank and congratulate all tobacco retailers that did not sell tobacco products to minors.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Northwest Region will hold a public involvement meeting to discuss improvements to U.S. Highway 12 between U.S. Highway 63 and Highway 128 in St. Croix County. The meeting is scheduled 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb 15, at the Village of Baldwin Municipal building, 400 Cedar St., Baldwin. The meeting will be an informal open house. Exhibits showing the plan concepts will be on display. Project representatives will be available to discuss the project on an individual basis.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Wisconsin and the United States, accounting for more than 370,000 deaths each year. While the death rate from heart disease fell about 38 percent from 2003-2013, the burden and risk factors remain alarmingly high. February is American Heart Month, an excellent time to educate individuals that heart disease can often be prevented by making healthy choices and managing their health conditions.
WOODBURY — Marie Frederick, member of Artists of Woodbury, is the creative genius behind the Bold North Art Experience. "I thought that it would be a great diversion, and fun experience for people to celebrate art during the festivities of Super Bowl LII," she said. "As an artist in the area, and art educator, I know many talented artists and decided to pull together a group for a sale January 28 to February 10 when people are celebrating the Super Bowl."
Ellsworth Community School District has announced school will be closed Monday, Jan. 22 due to a predicted a snowstorm. The Ellsworth Elementary Open House, scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 22 has been postponed. A new date will be announced. Other area schools who have cancelled school, as of 8 p.m. Sunday night, include Hastings, Goodhue and Red Wing.
The sixth annual Special Olympics basketball tournament is scheduled for Jan. 28. The opening ceremonies will be held 10:45 a.m. in the West Gym at the Baldwin-Woodville High School. Games start on the hour in the four gyms between Greenfield and the high school.
Each March the University of Wisconsin-River Falls works with the community to raise funds through the Bowls for Hope event where proceeds raised help a worthy organization make a difference in the St. Croix Valley. This year, Family Resource Center St. Croix Valley has been selected as the benefiting organization. Bowls for Hope 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in the Riverview Ballroom of the University Center at UW-River Falls.
MADISON — Registration is open for Farm and Rural Lobby Day on Feb. 21 in Madison. The event is hosted by Wisconsin Farmers Union. WFU President Darin Von Ruden urged WFU members from all corners of the state to make the trip to Madison. "Decisions that are made at the Capitol have a tremendous impact on our lives in rural Wisconsin. Farm and Rural Lobby Day is a chance to work together to strengthen the voices of family farmers and our rural communities," Von Ruden said.
