A search is on in northwest Wisconsin for a southeast Wisconsin police lieutenant wanted for burglary and the theft of a pickup truck. Authorities in Barron County said Waupun officer Bradley Young led officers on a chase last night and then fled on foot into a wooded area near Rice Lake.
The state Department of Justice says it’s considering legal action for three environmental violations connected with the rapid increase in frac-sand mining. Department of Natural Resources officials say additional cases could be referred for prosecution after the agency issued 20 violation notices to 19 companies since late 2011. The DNR said five frac-sand companies violated storm-water permits in April and May of this year when melting snow and rains pushed debris into streams and wetlands in Trempealeau and Barron counties. A relative has doubts about Sharon Wand’s dramatic recanting of her statement to police which implicated her husband and cousin in last year’s fire in Argyle that killed four of Wand’s children. Wand, 27, wrote letters to newspapers in Madison and Monroe to say that Armin and Jeremy Wand never set the fire. But after the letters were made public yesterday, her younger sister – Amy Peterson of Necedah – told the Wisconsin State Journal that Sharon is a gullible domestic violence victim whose husband Armin is controlling her from prison. Armin was sentenced to three life terms.

The family of Isaiah Thies – the two-year-old Polk County boy found dead in a car trunk – believes the toddler got into the vehicle on his own. Their pastor, Rick Van Gundy, said he also believes the family’s theory that Isaiah took the car keys from his dad’s auto repair business at their home, opened the trunk and crawled inside.
The demand for frac sand appears to be sinking in western Wisconsin and Minnesota – as least for now. Over 100 silica sand mines opened in the state in recent years, the most in the nation. However, both industry and government officials are saying the demand for frac sand has cooled off greatly this year – but it will grow again soon.

A 27-year-old man injured in a single-car accident July 3 died yesterday (Wednesday, July 10), according to the Wisconsin State Patrol. Joshua J. Weyker, Menomonie, was a front-seat passenger in a Chevrolet Impala driven by his wife when the accident occurred at 11:53 a.m. July 3 on the westbound side of I-94 at Milepost 36.5 near Knapp in Dunn County.
Gogebic Taconite has temporarily pulled its military-style security guards from its mining site in northern Wisconsin. The firm admitted Wednesday that Bulletproof Securities of Arizona worked for six days without having a state license. Private security firms are required to be licensed. If they’re not, the penalties can run up to $500 and six months in jail plus a one-year operating ban in Wisconsin. State safety officials did not say if they’ll seek penalties.
