EAU CLAIRE — Firefighters from 15 departments throughout west-central Wisconsin agreed on the toughest challenge as they prepared for an upcoming state certification test: The ladder challenge was not going to be easy.
WESTconsin Credit Union is offering $1,000 scholarships for up to 13 graduating high school seniors from the class of 2018 as part of their scholarship program. The goal is to award one scholarship in each community served by a WESTconsin office. These areas include Altoona, Amery, Baldwin, Barron, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Ellsworth, Hudson, Menomonie, New Richmond, Prescott, River Falls and Spring Valley. Scholarship recipients will be announced end of May 2018.

St. Croix County will hold the annual Clean Sweep Hazardous Waste Collection from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the county highway shop located at 666 E. Highway 12, Hudson. Hazardous waste from farms and businesses who qualify as a Very Small Quantity Generator will be collected 9-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6. A business or farm qualifies as a VSQG if it generates less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month and has less than 2,205 pounds of hazardous waste in storage.
The St. Croix Valley Shrine Club held their annual meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the New Richmond Golf Club. President Jeremy Fussy, who was completing his two-year term, reported his goal during his tenure was to increase attendance and involvement in the Shrine. He asked for constant feedback from members and his goal was realized. The stag affair also heard reports on the Roadrunners, the upcoming Fall Festival, Little East West Shrine game and plans for the next MSA in Deadwood, S.D., in August 2018.
Westfields cardiac rehab program receives certification
Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and their team are returning to Wisconsin. They plan to film episodes of the hit TV series "American Pickers" throughout the region in October. "American Pickers" is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique picking on the History channel. The show follows Wolfe and Fritz, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America's most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them.
Crowning Achievements will be hosting the ninth annual Pageant and Raffle at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at Faith Community Church, 1040 Paperjack Drive, New Richmond.
The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Center for Dairy Farm Safety will conduct the third annual Dairy Farm Safety Symposium at the World Dairy Expo on Thursday, Oct. 5, in Madison. The symposium is a series of workshops addressing topics related to dairy farm safety. Work-related injuries and fatalities on dairy farms are higher than any other agricultural sector in the United States. The symposium will feature interactive sessions led by national experts designed to assist dairy farm owners, managers and families in making dairy operations a safe place to work and live.
Hero K9 is pleased to announce that an equipment grant has been awarded to the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office for their K-9 Garza. A multi-threat vest will be provided to the agency at no cost, thanks to the generosity and support of Flowing Rivers' sponsoring donation of $950.
