MADISON - New Richmond High School wrestler Derek Dowd finished fifth in Division 1 at 152 pounds in the 72nd WIAA State Wrestling Tournament. Dowd wrestled a pair of matches Saturday in the placing round at the Kohl Center. He lost his first match to Kaukauna's Bailey Van Handel 10-0. But he came back to defeat Marcus Morrow of Wauwatosa in the fifth place match by a 5-0 score. Dowd, a senior, completes his season with a 40-4 overall record.
MADISON - Somerset High School wrestler Max Praschak lost a close and controversial semifinal match in Division 2 at 195 pounds in the semifinal round of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament Friday evening at the Kohl Center. Praschak lost 5-4 to Ramsey Bloy of Freedom. Praschak led the match 3-0 going into the third period but stalling calls on Praschak helped Bloy get back into the match. He scored a pair of takedowns in the third period which put him ahead.
MADISON - New Richmond High School wrestler Derek Dowd assured himself a place on the awards stand in Division 1 at 152 pounds. Dowd won both his consolation round matches Friday in the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center. He first defeated Baraboo's Zach Raymond by a 6-1 score, then knocked off Whitnall/Greendale's Eric Martinson 3-1 in the match which determined who would place in the top six. Dowd scored a takedown on Martinson in the second period to go ahead 3-0.
MADISON - Somerset High School wrestler Max Praschak made his way through the quarterfinal round of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament Friday afternoon at the Kohl Center. Praschak defated Evansville/Albany's Lucius Reinhart by a 10-5 decision at 195 pounds in Division 2. He led 4-1 after the first period and 7-1 after the second. Praschak, 20-2 overall, will wrestle in the semifinals this evening. He'll take on Ramsey Bloy of Freedom. Bloy, 44-1, tech.
MADISON - St. Croix Central's two wrestlers in the 72nd WIAA State Individual State Tournament were both defeated in the preliminary round Thursday at the Kohl Center. Ryan Gulich lost a close match to Elijah Alt of River Valley 4-3 at 145 pounds in Division 2 and Decker Grass was beaten 10-2 at 220 pounds by Dustin Bjugstad of Evansville/Albany. Gulich was down 4-1 in the third period when he scored and escape and tried hard to get a takedown to tie the match.
MADISON - Somerset High School wrestler Freddie Mangine was eliminated from the 72nd WIAA State Wrestling Tournament Thursday at the Kohl Center. Mangine lost a preliminary round match to Two Rivers's top-ranked Chris Yauch at 138 pounds in the Division 2 portion of the tournament. Yauch was in control of the match the whole way althought Mangine did his best to keep from being put on his back by the defending state champion until the 4:40 point of the match when Yauch got the pinfall. Mangine, a senior, finishes this season with a 27-14 record.
MADISON - New Richmond High School wrestler Derek Dowd was beaten in the first round of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Kohl Center. Dowd lost his 152-pound, Division 1 match to Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln's Brock Benitz by a 4-3 decision. Dowd fell behind 3-0 in the second period after an escape and takedown by Benitz. Dowd scored an escape to end the second period down just 3-1 but gave up an escape to start the third period.
NEW RICHMOND - Prescott defeated Somerset 44-40 in a WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal contest Thursday. PHS's Michael Brookshaw led his team in scoring with 14 points and made a key steal on Somerset's Gaelin Elmore with under :30 seconds remaining. Elmore tried to get the ball back but committed his fifth foul in the process. Brookshaw's two free-throws sealed the win. He had missed two free-throwa just a half-minute earlier. "I wanted another chance," Brookshaw said.
MADISON - Somerset's Max Praschak concluded his prep wrestling his season with a third place finish at the 71st WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday. Wrestling at 182 pounds in Division 2, Praschak wrestled in placing matches this morning and afternoon after losing in the semifinals last night. Praschak won his first match 9-6 over Brodhead/Juda's Gavin Baade and then defeated Wittenberg-Birnamwood's August Pelinski by a 2-1 score in the third place match. MADISON - Both of New Richmond's entries in the 71st WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament will come away with sixth places. Shane Blackman will take sixth at 126 pounds in Division 1 and Derek Dowd will place sixth at 138 pounds, also in Division 1. Both wrestlers took part in placing matches this morning and afternoon. It was another round of tough losses for Blackman. He lost his first match to Muskego's Austin Quartullo (38-4) by 6-5 score and then was beaten by MIlwaukee Riverside/Shorewood's Justin Folley 6-4 in the fifth place match.
