Last month, Matt Melby, director of New Richmond Area Ambulance Service, gave a presentation to the Village of Roberts Board about the new facility they are hoping to build in New Richmond. The ambulance district approached each of its members to share in the cost of financing the building. The only hitch: the Village of Roberts isn't officially a member. The village had discontinued its membership about 10 years ago, but the ambulance service has continued to cover their 911 calls since, Melby explained, the village falls within their district.
The holiday season is on the horizon, and people are gearing up to help out other members of the community. Monetary donations are always welcome, but if you're looking for ways to actively participate, there are several options. Thanksgiving Dinner For over 12 years, Ronda Bierbrauer has been organizing the Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin at 151 S. The new Papa B's Lounge doesn't look a thing like its predecessor. That's what the new owners are aiming for. Papa B's Lounge is in the former Loch Ness Lounge at 1580 32nd Street, near the St. Croix National Golf Club off Highway 64 near Somerset. Bernie Leverty owned the Loch Ness Lounge for 35 years before passing away March 2009. It was a well-known strip club for many years, but that is all in the past. Monea Johnson and Ryan Eskierka are the new owners of the facility.
It's a dilemma that occurs each year at the end of October: how to keep the kids from overdoing it with the Halloween candy. At the website www.kee pkidshealthy.com, there is a chart that breaks down the recommended calorie intake for children, based on age. For example, a 10-year-old is suggested to have 2,000 calories in his/her daily diet, while a 4-year-old is suggested to have 1,800.
The Somerset Senior Center hosted a pie-tasting event on Wednesday, Oct. 13. It was a kickoff event for their holiday pie sales that benefit their center. The frozen Sysco thaw-and-serve pies are already cooked, only needing to be defrosted before serving. There are four kinds to choose from: pumpkin, southern pecan, chocolate cream and apple. Each pie costs $8, with pickup at the Somerset Senior Center. However, for an additional $2/pie, they will deliver. Checks can be made payable to the Somerset Senior Center by Nov. 4; pies will be delivered between Nov.
It's never too early to start making Halloween plans. If you happen to be in the Somerset area the weekend of Oct. 30 and 31, you have a couple of spooky options. Haunted Hayride Saturday, Oct. 30 The Somerset Lions are sponsoring their first annual Haunted Hayride in Village Park down by the river. Geared toward participants 10 years and older, there will be two tractor-driven wagons that hold approximately 15-20 people at a time.
The main point of discussion at the joint meeting between the Town and Village of Somerset on Sept. 28 was the concert payment to the fire department. Terry Montpetit, former owner of the Float-Rite concert venue, had not paid the Village of Somerset for its services during the 2010 Country Splash concert in June. The property has since been sold at auction after filing for bankruptcy.
There may not be such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free ride -- at least for participants in the Young Eagles program.
The traffic signal at Main and Spring streets was on the minds of the Somerset Village Board members at their monthly meeting Tuesday, Sept. 21. The signal had been hit over a month ago, prompting board members to agree that the turning radius on that corner is tight.
Xaro looks forward to going to work every day. He just celebrated his 14th birthday, which - in human years - makes him approximately 98 years old. "He's about 72 pounds; the vet said he is at his perfect weight and is in great shape," Somerset Police Sgt. Mike Kappers, Xaro's partner, said. "He loves to play ball; he acts just like a puppy." As a dog of the Belgian Malinois breed, he has a lean build and brown/copper coloring.
