Friday Library Column: Teen Tech Week and other programs at the library

Jessica LaPean

Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technology, especially types offered through libraries. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to take advantage of the technology at libraries for education and recreation, and to recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals who can help them achieve greater digital literacy. Libraries can create a space to extend teens' learning beyond the classroom where they can explore, create and share content. Teen Tech Week is held annually in March. For more information, visit ala.org/teentechweek.

To encourage students in grades 6-12 to celebrate Teen Tech Week this year, Friday Memorial Library will be hosting a new escape room. "Minecraft: Back to Reality" lets teens imagine they've become trapped in the 8-bit world of Minecraft and the only way back to reality is by decoding the clues and opening locked boxes. The escape room will be available four different days, March 5-8 at 4 p.m., so teens can find the time that works best for them and their friends. Registration is required by stopping in or calling the library at 715-243-0431.
