Six-year-old Evan Gardner loves to color. His parents, Tim and Nicole Gardner, said that was what inspired his design for his Pinewood Derby car, Crayola.

Tim Gardner said the car was simple to make. It is painted green-and-yellow, in the manner of a Crayola crayon box. Tim and Evan Gardner carved out a small hollow space to fit four Crayola crayons as a part of the decoration.

"He loves to color," Nicole Gardner said. "So that's what he wanted to do."

Evan Gardner won the trophy for the most creative design at Cub Scout Pack 161's annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, March 23.

Cubmaster Wade Gardner said the Scouts received their cars in February. The boys then prepared the cars for Saturday's race.

"I would say it's one of the more popular things that we do," Wade Gardner said.

Gardner said scouts' fathers often help them build their cars, as Tim Gardner did with Evan Gardner.

"It's supposed to be something that you do with your dad," Wade Gardner said. "Hopefully, as you get older, you do a lot more of it yourself."

The Scouts also took a Pinewood Derby driver's test and each received a Pinewood Derby driver's license.

Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 161 helped run the derby. Kindergarten to second-grade Cub Scouts and Webelo Scouts competed.

This year's first place overall winner is Mark Albright. Other winners included second place winner Sam Gruenes, third place winner Max Kusilek and Evan Gardner.

This was Evan Gardner's first Pinewood Derby. Tim and Nicole Garnder said they are very proud of their son.
