Bayfield retired teacher climbing Mount Everest

A retired school teacher from Bayfield is making her final push this week to reach the top of Mount Everest.

Lori Schneider, 55, says she remains strong, in spite of her multiple sclerosis. She spent the last week decompressing at her base camp, gaining back five of the 10 pounds she has lost during her six-week trek.

Schneider has been preparing for the roughest part of the trip - crossing crevasses with ladders, while enduring extreme weather with temperatures down to 35 below zero.

She has climbed all but one of the world's seven major summits without extra oxygen - but she plans to use it once she passes 23,000 feet.

Then, it's another 6,000 feet to the top of the world's highest mountain and Schneider says the mountain will decide her fate.

She plans to reach the peak as early as Friday or Saturday.
