Eau Claire braces as Hutchinson Technology announces cutbacks
A Minnesota technology firm with a plant in Eau Claire says it will cut up to a quarter of its 4,500 employees.
Hutchinson Technology makes components for disk drives. And the firm says the demand for its products is dwindling due to the rough economy.
Spokeswoman Connie Pautz says a restructuring will take place next month, and there's no word on yet on how each of its plants will be affected.
The Eau Claire plant has about 1,350 workers. The firm says those who stay will take 5 percent pay cuts.
Those moves and others are expected to save up to $80 million a year.
