Roundabouts coming to Hammond

Construction has started on the Hammond exit off Interstate 94 and County Road T.

Work began at the end of March and is scheduled to be completed by mid-November, said Project Manager Stacie Lambele from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The interchange will see multiple improvements, including roundabouts, entrance and exit ramp extensions, and a new two-lane County Road T bridge over I-94, which will include eight-foot sidewalks on each side for pedestrian and bicyclists.

Lambele said the work is needed for multiple reasons as the current bridge, built in 1958, is old and deteriorating. The DOT also wanted room for bikers and walkers, she said, and the current interchanges have site issues and roundabouts will reduce those concerns.

The DOT promotes roundabouts as moving traffic through an intersection faster, and with less congestion on approaching roads.

“Traffic is not required to stop - only yield - so the intersection can handle more traffic in the same amount of time,” Lambele continued.

Lambele also added that based on their research, County Road T is one of the most heavily-traveled roads in St. Croix County.

There will be a period of road closure, planned from July 10-July 31, weather permitting. A detour route will be provided on US Highways 12 and 63 and State Highway 65.

“Everything is on schedule,” Lambele said.
