Sauvola elected to national post

At the Region Three National Agriculture Teachers' meeting in La Crosse the week of June 23, local high school teacher Rachel Sauvola was elected vice chair of the National Marketing Committee.

Sauvola will serve one year as vice chair and move into the chair position for the following year-and-a-half.

"Our mission is to increase the number of agriscience programs across the nation as part of the National Association of Agricultural Educators," Sauvola explained.

The goal, according to Sauvola, is to have 10,000 agriscience programs in the U.S. by the year 2015. Sauvola admits it's a lofty goal, especially since the number of programs currently stands at 7,300.

"It's a bit of a daunting task," Sauvola said. "But it will be exciting to be on the forefront of such growth and to be offering students opportunities as a result of expanding programs."

The second part of Sauvola's task as vice chair and chair will be to recruit and retain agriscience instructors and FFA advisors at schools that currently offer such classes.

"This will involve looking at new teacher programs to help and support these new people," Sauvola said. "I will be working closely with the University of Wisconsin - River Falls, Platteville and Madison to accomplish this goal."

Sauvola's tenure as vice chair began on June 19.
