Tuesday's Results: Somerset varsity teams get three wins; New Richmond boys hoops defeated

Tuesday night brought big success for the Somerset athletic programs, but the New Richmond boys basketball was defeated in its season opener.

The Somerset boys hockey, boys basketball and girls basketball teams all recorded wins on Tuesday.

The Somerset boys hockey team opened its season Tuesday against Chisago Lakes. The Spartans won on their home ice, 4-1. After a scoreless first period, Jack Peterson netted two goals early in the second period. Jackson Haukom also scored before Chisago scored with nine seconds left in the second period. Ryan Kelly scored the only goal of the third period. Francisco Gomez made an impressive showing in goal for the Spartans, stopping 37 shots.

The Somerset boys basketball team earned its first win of the season, notching a 46-43 win at St. Croix Falls. Somerset's girls also pulled out a close non-conference game to get their first win of the season. They won at Unity, 64-61.

New Richmond's boys basketball team faced a tough challenge in its opener on Tuesday. The Tigers lost at Rice Lake, 60-42.
