Soul food with a touch of magic. That's the way Christian Orosz describes the food at his new restaurant, Vudu Street Food, which opened on Friday, April 28, in New Richmond.

"We serve street food, since that is a culture and type of food I really enjoy. It is something you would find while walking down the streets of Mexico or Peru. To me, that is the real food," Orosz said. "The menu was really carried over from our two food trucks in Minneapolis, so kind of like bringing the food truck inside."

Vudu Street Food (121 S. Knowles Ave.) is the third restaurant Orosz has opened, including one in Florida, and the now closed Kitchen Market in Hudson.

"We were looking for a new location after closing our restaurant in Hudson, which we did because the revenue wasn't as good as we had thought it would be. I just moved to Roberts and I was out here exploring New Richmond ... I saw a for rent sign on the window and when I called they told me that there was a kitchen in the back. I fell in love with the brick wall and the space was perfect for the kind of food we were doing," Orosz said.

According to Orosz, the restaurant took about a month and a half to set up once he started leasing the space.

"After the bridge opened up, my friends who are real estate agents are buying up all the land they can to put homes on. So I saw a huge potential. A lot of young people are moving back here from the Cities to get away from that city life. So I felt the timing was right and there was a need," Orosz said.

Vudu will be getting a beer and wine license in the near future, which will give Orosz the opportunity to feature local beers and wine.

"We've already had a lot of success so far. People are very welcoming here and the city has been great. I think people are happy to have another option," Orosz said. "The idea behind the style of the restaurant is to have a casual, common place for people to relax, hang out and get a quick meal."

Other additions Orosz plans on implementing at Vudu include installing a counter in front of the restaurant — for customers to enjoy the weather in addition to their food — as well as scheduling live music.

"We want people to come in and spend time with each other. We want them to get away from just running into McDonalds and eating in the car on the go," Orosz said. "We want to make it very interactive. We want to evolve into that little, local, hole in the wall place where you can get great food at a reasonable price."

Vudu's hours are: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. Orosz said that those hours could change or expand as the restaurant gets going and is able to fill out its staff.

"As we settle down, we are planning on updating our menu items, which will be updated on our website as well," Orosz said.

Vudu also offers catering with a customizable menu for every event. For more information on Vudu Street Food, visit or the Vudu Street Food Facebook page.
