Thursday’s Results: Schmitt, Huerta sweep titles at Somerset XC Invitational

Somerset runners Ben Schmitt and Erin Huerta swept the championships as the Spartans hosted their home cross country meet on Thursday.

Schmitt battled Ellsworth’s Addison Peters for the lead in the boys race for much of the way, with Peters holding a slight lead the last time they past the final large group of spectators. But in the final stretch of the race, Schmitt was able to take charge, with the Spartan senior winning in 18:40. Peters took second place in 18:51.

Ellsworth captured the boys team title, finishing with 31 points. Somerset was second among the five teams with 48 points. Zach Maitrejean placed fourth for the Spartans, with Thor Sanders seventh, Tyler Hantsbarger 13th and Alex DeGeest 24th.

Huerta faced no serious challengers in the girls race. Led by her standout performance, the Spartans were able to record their first team victory in many years.

Huerta won the girls race in 22:44. Prescott’s Amanda Auleciems placed second in 23:38.

Somerset’s trio of juniors were major contributors in the team victory, with Kristen Vensland in sixth place, Brycen Chladek in seventh and Liv Hoff in eighth place. Freshman Anna Bartig made a strong finish to move up to 15th for Somerset’s final placing runner.

Somerset won the girls meet with 37 points, with Prescott in second with 51 points.

The Spartans were defeated in a game at Barron on Thursday, 3-2. Aaron Shartin-Folkert and Brody Harris scored Somerset's goals. Shartin-Folkert assisted on Harris' goal and Ethan Midbrod assisted on Shartin-Folkert's goal.

New Richmond girls tennis

The Tigers earned an important Middle Border Conference win, sweeping the matches at Baldwin-Woodville on Thursday, 7-0. Mia Bakke, Teresa Tenner, Ari Devereux and Zoe Davis earned wins in the singles matches for New Richmond. The doubles teams of Anna Hop and Katey Eickhoff, Kerrigan Storie and Sydney Hahn, and Sophie Fuchs and Brogan O'Flanagan were also winners for the Tigers.
