Kiwanis=Kids and the unofficial motto is "Kids Need Kiwanis, Kiwanis Needs You!"
For you language lovers, Kiwanis is derived from early Americans and was probably derived from Nunc Kee-wanis, (we trade) and later was modified to Kiwanis as "I play with noise." Along the way, Kiwanis added an event called Bnaakwii Giizis (Falling Leaves Moon).
This Friday, Oct. 19, the Kiwanis Club of New Richmond proudly presents our Bnaakwii Giizis event which features Dueling Guitars for entertainment, great food, games, lots of raffle items, a live auctio, and plenty of fun to be had for everyone. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 6:15 p.m. The event is held at R & D Banquet Center (Ready Randy's). Tickets are available at WESTconsin Credit Union, Ready Randy's Sports Bar & Grill or text the event organizer, Lindsey Springer, at 651-238-4528.
Bnaakwii Giizis is a big fundraiser for our local Kiwanis and we greatly appreciate the generous support of many local businesses and individuals. We are blessed to be in a community that truly values sharing time and talent for the greater good of others. Come join in the fun and make a difference for the children we serve. Tickets are $45.
Members of Kiwanis volunteer their time and talent to promote events like Bnaakwii Giizis. Long standing members donate huge amounts of time, talent and money for our youth. At the beginning of October we honored three outstanding Kiwanians. Dave Schnitzler was honored with the Legion of Honor 30 Year Award. He became a member on April 1, 1988 (no fooling) and was club president, very involved with the BackPack Program, Five Loaves Food Shelf, the Easter Hunt Event, Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army, assisted with the honors banquet program, was a Kiwanis Klown, promoted special projects and is our beverage person for steak frys among other things. We thank Dave for 30 thrilling years of service.
Stan Barr was honored for the Legion of Honor 45 Year Award. Stan became a member on Sept. 1, 1972, and held the office of President, has been willing to volunteer for anything that fits in his schedule including the BackPack Program, Five Loaves, Peanut Days, previous dinner fundraisers and was instrumental in starting the current Honor's Banquet. Stan has volunteered for nearly everything through the years including the Easter Egg Hunt, Kids' Christmas Party, golfing fun, and has invited several new members into the Kiwanis family through the years. Stan is a poster person for Kiwanis.
We also honored Bill Derrick through a Recognition and Remembering of Dedicated Service. Bill provided more than 50 years of dedicated service and leadership in our Kiwanis organization. He became a member in January 1968 and served as Board Director, Club President, Lt. Governor for our Division, and was instrumental in inviting the first women into the Kiwanis Club New Richmond in 1992. We greatly appreciated his dedication, service, time, fellowship and all-around support to and for our Club. Bill's family received the 50 Year Legion of Honor Award after his passing and proudly displayed it at his visitation. Bill was also recognized earlier this year at the Kiwanis International level with the George F. Hixson Fellowship, a high honor in Kiwanis.
And lastly, we honor a short-time member of Kiwanis who joined because of a quest for life-long learning and a willingness to contribute back to society in any way possible. My mom, Donna Kier, passed away on Oct. 11, and we honor her commitment to Kiwanis and to a caring heart here on Earth. She always looked for ways to help people and will be missed. Thank you Mom!
Kiwanis=Kids and we ARE blessed to work together for the needs of our children. Kiwanis Needs are actually the needs of the children we serve. We hope to see you at the eighth annual Kiwanis Bnaakwii Giizis Fundraiser event on Oct. 19. All proceeds go back to youth in our community. Kids Need Kiwanis. Kiwanis Needs ... YOU!
