SCC trio all to place in state wrestling meet, LeRoy eliminated
MADISON - St. Croix Central brought a trio of wrestlers to the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament and all three will come away with places.
The Central 3 all won their consolation matches mid-afternoon and all will wrestle in placement matches Saturday morning.
Carl Moll had the most dramatic win as he scored a reversal with :10 seconds to go in the third period against senior Taylor Heunink (41-5) of Waupun and won the 170-pound match 3-2.
"I was able to get some room which gave me angle to take if I went hard and I did," Moll said afterward catching his breath. I was able to shed his hold and get the points."
Just before Moll's match concluded teammate Cody Nyhagen won comfortably over senior Cole Hansen (42-7) of Marshall by an 11-3 major decision at 160. Then Kyle Aaby completed the Panther trifecta with a 5-2 win over Danny Dobbs of Melrose-Mindoro/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau at 182. Aaby went ahead 3-2 in the second period after scoring a reversal then got back points in the third while riding out Dobbs.
Moll, Nyhagen and Aaby all left the Kohl Center floor smiling and congratulating each other, a far cry from the disappointment the trio felt after the morning's quarterfinal matches.
"We got together and said this is our last chance and we need, all of us, need to go out and win to come out of here with something," Moll said. "That's what motivated us to wrestle the way we did."
However, the continued to be a disappointment for Somerset's Bobby LeRoy. He lost his consolation round match to Monroe senior Kevin Klopfenstein (44-6) by a 5-0 and was eliminated from the tournament.
