Swenson competes at youth wrestling nationals

Brett Swenson

Brett Swenson of Roberts competed at the 2017 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals this past weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Swenson, who wrestles for St. Croix Central and for the Crass Trained Weigh-in Club in Eau Claire, placed fifth in the 75-pound intermediate division. By placing in the top five in his class, Swenson earned All-American honors. The event was held at the UNI-Dome on the campus of Northern Iowa University.

Swenson won his first two matches at the tournament, pinning wrestlers from Indiana and Missouri. In the semifinals he was defeated by a wrestler from Colorado. This opponent went on to win the national title.

In the first round of wrestlebacks he faced a fellow Wisconsin wrestler, losing 6-0 to an opponent from Kenosha. Swenson faced another Wisconsin opponent in the fifth place match. He scored a pin in 1:26 over a wrestler from Waupun to place fifth in his bracket.

Swenson was the only wrestler from our local schools to compete at the national tournament. Amery had five wrestlers competing, St. Croix Falls had four and Clear Lake had seven.
