New Richmond Millers make their mark at St. Croix Valley Baseball League All-Star Game
The New Richmond Millers showed at the 2017 St. Croix Valley League All-Star Game on Saturday that they have some young players who are ready to make an impact in the league.
New Richmond’s Nate Olin and Caleb Manecke both had two hits and were key components in the scoring rallies that carried the North team to a 7-1 victory at First National Bank of River Falls Field in River Falls.
Olin was the starting centerfielder while Manecke came in at catcher midway through the game. Veteran infielder Jon Will also saw action. Nearly all of the New Richmond players attended the game to support their teammates.
Millers manager Ryan Stephens said Olin grabbed the attention of all the fans.
“We don’t name a game MVP. If anyone deserved Offensive MVP, it was Nate. He stole the show. He hit line drives,” Stephens said.
Olin also made a key defensive play. A South player who singled expected Olin to throw to turn to try nabbing the lead runner. Olin anticipated this and threw to second base to get the trailing runner on the play.
Stephens said this is the type of impact SCVBL fans should expect in future seasons as the team grows together.
“That’s the type of players we have. We’re going in the right direction,” he said.
The only game the Millers played last week resulted in a 7-0 loss at Menomonie June 30. The Millers had their chances in this game, connecting for seven hits. After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning, the Millers stranded five runners in scoring position during the game.
Manecke was the offensive leader for New Richmond, producing a double and a triple.
The Millers resume action this Wednesday with a home game at Citizens Field at 7:30 p.m. against Blaine. The Millers will play the same time on Friday when they’re at the Eau Claire Bears. The Millers then have a week off before playing their annual Fun Fest clash with Osceola on July 14.
