Wally Dunn, former New Richmond football and wrestling coach, passes away

Wally Dunn was a long-time teacher and coach at New Richmond High School.

Former New Richmond coach and teacher Wally Dunn passed away Wednesday at the Deerfield Gables Care Center in New Richmond. He was 85.

Dunn began his New Richmond coaching career in 1965, as the varsity coach for football, wrestling and baseball.

Dunn coached the Tiger football team for nine years, from 1965 to 1973. His teams finished with a 55-22-1 overall record. That included one second place finish in the Middle Border Conference and six third place finishes.

Dunn had an outstanding record in his seven years as the Tiger wrestling coach, finishing with a 61-6 dual record. Dunn coached Ted Stephens to the first WIAA individual state championship won by a New Richmond athlete in 1965. He coached state champions three years in a row, with Stephens winning in 1965 and 1966 and Arlyn Hansen in 1967. He coached New Richmond to its last three Middle Border Conference team championships, in 1969, 1970 and 1971. Coach Dunn had 34 wrestlers win individual MBC championships and he had 24 wrestlers qualify for the WIAA state championships.

Dunn coached baseball for one year, but it was a success. He led the Tigers to their first MBC championship in 1965.

After retiring from coaching, Dunn remained active in Tiger athletics and he served as a WIAA wrestling official for more than a decade.

Dunn was a chemistry and physics teacher at New Richmond High School. He retired in the early 2000s. He was the Key Club adviser for more than two decades. In 1970, Key Club was an all-male organization. Dunn allowed female students to join. In 1975, under Dunn’s leadership, New Richmond had the first female Key Club officers in the state, with Dunn and attorney Tom Bell fighting to cause the Key Club to change its state by-laws so that girls were allowed to participate and to become officers.

Anyone who would like to make a gesture in his memory can donate to the Walk to End Alzheimer's or join Wally's team. The walk is in New Richmond on September 16, starting at The Deerfield. His team name is Wally's Wandering Warriors. Registration and information can be found at
