Being an extra qualifier for the WIAA state tennis championships is a unique situation.

A committee of the top coaches in the state looks at a list of names and asks "Who are the best players who didn't qualify for the state tournament?"

When it's asked that way, New Richmond senior Greta Bakke was an obvious choice. Bakke made the second appearance of her career at the WIAA Division 1 state championships last Thursday.

Bakke drew sophomore Morgan Olson from Beaver Dam in the opening round of the Division 1 singles tournament last Thursday. Olson won 6-2, 6-1.

Bakke finished the season with a 23-7 record.

Bakke and Olson played a closer match than the score would indicate. The first set stood at 3-2 and the next several games were long, going to deuce several times before Olson got the win.

"Greta played very solid," said Tiger coach Denise Devereux. "Greta would attack really well but (Olson) would play a great defensive lob."

Olson then had to face Stevens Point junior Sabrina Tang in the second round. Tang, who was undefeated entering the tournament, defeated Olson 6-1, 6-1.

Bakke completes her career as the only Tiger who has qualified for state singles twice since New Richmond moved to Division 1 more than a decade ago.

"She's definitely one of the top players we've ever had," said Devereuxof her coaching time with the Tigers. "Her work and dedication to improving her tennis are far and above what anyone has ever done."
