New Richmond's boys soccer earns return trip to sectionals, beats Onalaska 3-0

New Richmond's AJ Johnson (11) weaved his way past several Onalaska to score the Tigers' third goal of the game on Saturday.

The New Richmond boys soccer team has earned a return trip to the WIAA Division 2 sectional tournament.

The Tigers won the regional championship on their home turf Saturday, defeating Onalaska 3-0. The Tigers will now play in the sectional semifinal game this Thursday. The Tigers will host Holmen at 5 p.m. New Richmond is the top seed in this regional bracket and Holmen is the second seed.

New Richmond got an early edge in Saturday's game when senior Tyler Blattner took control of the ball in the offensive end, slashed toward the goal and fired a shot past the Onalaska keeper 7:43 into the game.

The Tigers extended the lead to 2-0 at the 39:13 mark. Andy Boerjan's shot was blocked by the Onalaska keeper, but AJ Johnson hurled his body at the ball, connecting on a keeper that drove the ball into the goal.

Johnson added to his team record goal total 15 minutes into the second half. He weaved his way through several Onalaska defenders, firing a rocket that flew past the Onalaska keeper at the 60:44 mark.

New Richmond is the defending sectional champion, having made the program's first trip to the WIAA state championships in 2016.
