The Somerset and New Richmond wrestling teams both came away from the 2018 Middle Border Conference Wrestling Tournaments with reason to be proud.

Somerset produced one of its best team finishes ever, placing second in the team competition at the 2018 tournament, held Saturday at Baldwin-Woodville High School. New Richmond placed third in the team competition and the Tigers were able to produce three individual champions.

Depth is what earned Somerset the second place finish in the team event. Ellsworth won the team title with 271 pounds. The battle for second place was expected to be close and it was. Somerset took second place with 161 points. New Richmond finished with 159.5, Baldwin-Woodville 156.5 and Osceola 145.

Somerset had 10 wrestlers place fourth or higher in their weight classes. The Spartans didn't have any individual champions, but seniors Preston Anez, Garret Hecht and Zeb Rivard all reached the championship matches in their weight classes.

New Richmond was able to reach third place because of the points earned with three individual championships. Sophomore Brandon Dennis was the master of close matches on Saturday, winning twice in overtime to capture the 126-pound title. Seniors Dylan Wachter at 152 pounds and Nathan Fehlen at 160 pounds were also MBC individual champions. Also reaching the finals for the Tigers was Ryan Muller at 220 pounds.

St. Croix Central finished eighth in the team scoring. The only Panther to reach the finals was Ryan Larson, who suffered a 4-3 loss to Prescott's Ty Sanford in the 195-pound finals.
