New Richmond, Somerset boys basketball advance in the WIAA regional tournaments
The New Richmond and Somerset boys basketball team both posted upsets in the opening round of WIAA regional tournament action on Tuesday night.
New Richmond went to Sparta and scored a 55-45 victory in Division 2 action. Somerset travelled to Barron and tallied a 57-48 win in a Division 3 game. It was a night for Middle Border Conference teams to pull off upsets, because 11th seeded Amery went to Hayward and put down the sixth-seeded Hurricanes, 58-47.
New Richmond was seeded behind Sparta by the Division 2 coaches despite having a superior record. The Tigers went to Sparta and proved which team deserved the better seed. The Tigers won the game with balanced scoring. Joey Kidder led the Tigers with 16 points, while Cole Effertz finished with 13 points and Blake Getschel 11 points.
Somerset trailed at Barron through most of Tuesday's game. The Spartans then used an 18-4 run in the final eight minutes of the game to overtake the Bears. Sophomore Ty Madden again led Somerset, finishing with 23 points. Senior Bennett Baillargeon played one of his best halves of the season in the second half, scoring all eight of his points after halftime.
New Richmond and Somerset will both return to action on Friday, facing the top seed in their regional brackets. New Richmond will play at La Crosse Central, the top Division 2 seed, at 7 p.m. on Friday, while Somerset will play at the Division 3 top seed, Prescott, also at 7 p.m. on Friday.
