When New Richmond and River Falls meet in soccer, it's always a heated contest. With a chance to play in the WIAA Division 2 sectional championship riding on Thursday's game, the intensity took on another level.

When the dust settled, River Falls held a 1-0 victory. That advances to the Wildcats to the sectional championship game on Saturday. The opponent will be Pulaski, which defeated Marshfield 2-1 on Thursday. New Richmond recently defeated Pulaski in a tournament at Rhinelander.

The only goal of Thursday's game between the Tigers and Wildcats came at the 38:19 mark. River Falls senior Gina Filkins got the ball deep in the corner and she drove a high-arcing pass toward the front of the Tiger goal. The ball carried past the girls huddled around the center of the net. At the back pst was River Falls sophomore Ella Durocher, and she went up with her body to redirect the ball into the goal.

The Tigers finish the season with two losses, both of them coming against River Falls. The first was in an indoor game played at Stillwater because there were no outdoor fields usable because of the late spring snow.
