Spartans get shot at second place

For the seven Middle Border Conference wrestling teams not from Ellsworth, second place is the best you can do every year.

And for the first time in a number of years, the Somerset wrestlers have a chance to be the second place team in the MBC this season. Second place will likely be decided this Thursday, when Somerset wrestles at Baldwin-Woodville. Those are the two teams in the running for second place in the MBC dual meet standings this season.

Thursday's match is all the more intriguing because the two teams are quite similar and they've take similar routes for this chance. Somerset and B-W are both strongest in the lower weights. The final outcome in Thursday's match might ride on the upper weights and which team can pull out more major decisions and pins.

Somerset and B-W are also similar because they've taken the long road back to relevance in the MBC. Both programs fell toward the bottom of the standings a few years ago, but they have re-established themselves among the stronger programs in the conference.

The Spartans will be in action this Saturday, competing in a tournament at East Ridge High School in Woodbury. The Spartans will wrestle at Amery next Monday, making up the match that was postponed last Thursday.
