Division 2 Wrestling: Somerset wrestlers are regional champions

Saturday was a milestone day for the Somerset wrestling team.

The Spartans won the WIAA Division 2 regional championship, doing it by the narrowest of possible margins at the Division 2 meet held at St. Croix Central on Saturday.

Somerset finished with a team score of 206 to win the regional title, finishing one point ahead of Osceola, which had 205. Amery took third iwth 153 points. St. Croix Central was fifth with 138 points.

Somerset is advancing seven wrestlers to the sectional level and St. Croix Central is sending three on to sectionals. In Division 2, the top two wrestlers in each weight class advance to the sectional level. The wrestlers from the St. Croix Central regional meet will compete at the Amery Division 2 sectional meet next Saturday.

Somerset won the regional title on the strength of five individual regional championships. Winning individual titles were Tyler Hantsbarger at 120 pounds, Nick Kearns at 126 pounds, Jared Grahovac at 138 pounds, Preston Anez at 152 pounds and Garret Hecht at 170 pounds. Advancing as second place finishers were Zach Maitrejean at 145 pounds and Nick Bushinger at 160 pounds. The Spartans also had three wrestlers finish third in their weight classes.

St. Croix Central had one individual champion. Junior Ryan Larson pinned his way through the competition to win the 195-pound title. Tadan Holzer was a second place finisher at 126 pounds and Frank Holter was the second place finisher at 138 pounds.
